The International Institute Of Fashion Design (FIT) offers a comprehensive curriculum for aspiring fashion professionals. FIT’s Associate Degree programs require students to complete a minimum of 24 credits in liberal arts courses. These courses include three credits in written and oral communication, three credits in English literature or speech, and three credits each in mathematics, natural science, and diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice. Importantly, History of Art (HA) courses are excluded from the DVRS requirement.
Students are also required to take three credits in HA 118, another three credits in any History of Art course, and three additional credits chosen from various SUNY General Education areas such as Social Science, US History and Civic Engagement, Humanities, The Arts, World History and Global Awareness, and World Languages. Again, History of Art courses are not applicable towards these three credits.
FIT’s General Education requirements ensure students receive a well-rounded education that extends beyond their chosen field of study. A complete list of approved General Education courses can be found on FIT’s website under the “NEW FIT’s General Education Requirements and Courses” section. Each FIT Gen Ed course can only fulfill one General Education area requirement. Students should consult their DARS audit to confirm which specific courses are required for their major to satisfy General Education credits.
In addition to the liberal arts core, students must complete 1.5 credits (minimum) in related area electives. This can be fulfilled through FA 105 or another approved Fine Arts course.
FIT provides flexible learning options with evening and weekend programs available for the Fashion Design AAS degree. Detailed information on course sequences and curriculum overviews for these options can be found on the FIT website.
FIT offers a pathway to advanced studies; graduates of the AAS program can apply to various Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and Bachelor of Science (BS) programs. BFA options include Fabric Styling, Fashion Design specializations (Children’s Wear, Intimate Apparel, Knitwear, Special Occasion, Sportswear), Textile/Surface Design, and Toy Design. BS program options include Production Management: Fashion and Related Industries, Technical Design, and Textile Development and Marketing. This allows students to further specialize their skills and knowledge within the fashion industry.
Expanding its global presence, the International Institute of Fashion Design provides international study opportunities. The two-year AAS in Fashion Design is offered at SUNY Korea, located in Incheon, South Korea.
Furthermore, FIT collaborates with Polimoda in Florence, Italy to offer an international option for the two-year AAS in Fashion Design program. This partnership provides students with a unique opportunity to experience the Italian fashion industry and immerse themselves in a different culture.
