Discovering Your Fashion Point: The 8-Point Rule for Balanced Style

You know I love a good fashion concept to play with. Whether it’s a capsule wardrobe, a 10×10 challenge, or even a 2×2 outfit formula, I’m always eager to try new approaches to style. Recently, I encountered the 8 Point Rule of Fashion, and it immediately caught my attention as a clever way to think about outfits.

Understanding the 8 Point Rule

The rule is simple: assign points to each clothing item in your closet. Basics are worth 1 point, while items with more flair and personality get 2 points. When you create an outfit, you tally up the points for each piece you’re wearing.

The aim? To keep your total outfit around 8 points. This is considered the ideal balance, where your look is neither too understated nor over-the-top – hitting that perfect fashion point.

It sounded more complicated than it is at first, but in practice, calculating the points takes just moments. It’s less about strict rules and more about having another tool in your style toolkit, especially useful when you feel stuck in a fashion rut.

Let’s break down an example outfit using this system to see how it works:

  • Tee = 1 point | For me, a basic white tee like this is a 1-pointer because it’s a classic cut I wear frequently and can pair with anything.
  • Jeans = 2 points | These baggy jeans earn 2 points because their fit is more fashion-forward and on-trend.
  • Flip Flops = 1 point | These are everyday flip-flops, so they’re a 1-point basic for my wardrobe.
  • Bag = 2 points | This designer bag gets 2 points due to its brand, unique shape, and the fact that it’s not a standard black.
  • Jewelry = 2 points | I’m adding 2 points for jewelry because wearing earrings, a bracelet, and multiple rings is more than my usual minimalist jewelry approach.

Adding up the points, we reach exactly 8!

For someone who gravitates towards basics, this rule is a fantastic way to ensure outfits aren’t too plain. It’s a simple strategy to elevate everyday looks. If I hadn’t considered the point system when putting this outfit together, I might have skipped the statement bag or extra jewelry. But thinking in terms of points encouraged me to make those small adjustments to enhance the overall style.

Of course, defining what’s a 1-pointer versus a 2-pointer is subjective. My minimalist style influences my point assignments. Someone with a maximalist aesthetic might rate the same items differently. And that’s the beauty of this approach – it’s not rigid or universal; it’s personal. You decide based on your individual style, taste, and preferences to find your own fashion point.

Have you experimented with the 8 Point Rule of Fashion? I’m curious to know your experiences and thoughts on using this concept to achieve your perfect fashion point!
