Residency Requirements for Tuition Purposes at FIT NYC

Establishing residency in New York State can significantly impact tuition rates at the Fashion Institute of Technology. US citizens and permanent resident aliens must establish a domicile in New York State for at least one year before the semester starts to qualify for in-state tuition.

A domicile is a permanent residence with the intention to return after any absence. Merely residing in New York for 12 months does not automatically establish domicile. Additionally, students under 24 with out-of-state parents or guardians must demonstrate financial independence and an established New York domicile.

Residency applications and further details are available at the Bursar’s Office or on the FIT website: fitnyc.edu/bursar. Completed applications and supporting documentation must be submitted before the registration period ends.

New York City residents meeting the state residency requirements need not file a County Certificate of Residence. However, New York State residents outside the five boroughs must file this certificate annually with the Bursar’s Office. Specific county deadlines and criteria for issuing these certificates may apply.

For more information regarding residency requirements and the County Certificate of Residence application process, visit fitnyc.edu/bursar. Failure to submit a valid certificate will result in non-resident tuition charges. New York State residents who have moved counties within the past six months must file certificates with both counties.

International students holding F-1 Student Visas are not eligible for New York State resident tuition rates at FIT. Students with other visa types might qualify if they have been New York State residents for one year before registration and have held the qualifying visa for at least a year before registration.
