The early 1990s saw a continuation of popular 1980s athletic wear like biker shorts, leggings, Keds, and oversized sweatshirts. Simultaneously, a resurgence of 1960s and 1970s fashion emerged, bringing back mini-skirts, flared pants, and punk styles. This renewed interest in vintage clothing fueled the growth of second-hand clothing stores, which played a significant role in the burgeoning grunge movement.

Grunge, originating in Seattle in the late 1980s, reached mainstream popularity in the early 1990s. This style embraced everyday clothing: baggy, worn jeans, flannel shirts, and Doc Martens boots defined the grunge aesthetic. Women often incorporated simple slip dresses paired with chunky boots. By 1993, grunge’s influence extended to high fashion, notably featured in Marc Jacobs’ collection for Perry Ellis.

The rise of grunge coincided with a shift in the modeling world. Supermodels, previously celebrated for their glamour, were replaced by a new archetype: the waif-like model, epitomized by Kate Moss. Known for her “heroin chic” photoshoots in gritty urban settings, Moss embodied the decade’s move towards a more understated and raw aesthetic. This “dressed-down” style was a stark contrast to the polished image of supermodels, allowing the clothes themselves to take center stage.

By the mid-1990s, fashion trends took a turn towards a more feminine aesthetic. Minimalism reigned, and the slip dress became a defining garment of the era. Silky slip dresses were favored for formal occasions, while a more casual daytime look involved layering a slip dress over a simple white t-shirt.

The “sexy schoolgirl” look gained traction in the mid-1990s, popularized by movies like Clueless and later by Britney Spears’ iconic “…Baby One More Time” music video. This trend included undersized sweaters, baby doll t-shirts, and knee-high socks, embraced by young women across the decade.
