Fashion Sense is a framework that allows Stardew Valley modders to create custom clothing and accessories, including larger and more dynamic options than the default game allows. This includes static or animated accessories, hairstyles, hats, shirts, pants, and shoes. The framework also incorporates special conditions for animations, enabling dynamic movement such as hair that reacts to walking or running. Fashion Sense also supports saving and loading custom outfits.
The framework has been implemented in stages, starting with hair in version 1.0.0 and progressing to include accessories, hats, shirts, pants, sleeves, and finally boots in version 4.3.0. Each update expanded the customization options available to players.
A key feature of Fashion Sense is its ability to use default hair. This means that even with the mod installed, players can choose to keep their original Stardew Valley hairstyle. This provides flexibility for players who prefer the vanilla aesthetics or want to mix and match custom content with the original game’s style.
To create custom content for Fashion Sense, modders can refer to the comprehensive wiki on the GitHub repository. Template files using vanilla-esque sizes are available on the template page, allowing for easier creation of new items. An example pack is also provided in the Optional Files section of the repository. For converting Json Assets pants and skirts, the SkirtConverter tool by Violetlizabet is available.
Using Fashion Sense requires a compatible content pack. These packs add the custom accessories, hairstyles, and clothing items that can be used in-game. Multiple content packs can be installed simultaneously, expanding the customization options even further. Players can change their Fashion Sense items using the Hand Mirror tool. This in-game tool allows players to select and equip different custom items and save and load outfits.
The Hand Mirror can be purchased from Pierre’s shop or obtained at character creation by selecting the “Start with Mirror” option.
Fashion Sense and its content packs can be uninstalled without causing issues. The game will revert to using the default vanilla assets if the framework or content packs are removed. However, the Hand Mirror needs to be discarded before uninstalling Fashion Sense to avoid any conflicts. There’s no limit to the number of Fashion Sense content packs that can be used.
To change hairstyles to a Fashion Sense option, players can use the “Hairstyles” button during character creation or utilize the Hand Mirror after starting the game. To revert to the vanilla appearance, the “None” option can be selected in the Hand Mirror menu for the respective clothing or accessory slot. If the Hand Mirror isn’t available in Pierre’s shop, the console command “fs_add_mirror” can be used to add it to the player’s inventory. The source code for Fashion Sense is available on GitHub.
