Newport Beach police are actively searching for three suspects involved in a robbery outside Fashion Island Mall on Monday night. The incident, which occurred around 11:26 p.m., targeted two individuals in the parking lot as they were about to leave the premises.
According to police reports, the two victims, who are friends, were entering their high-end vehicles, a Ferrari and a Rolls Royce, when they were accosted by three men wearing ski masks. During the brazen robbery, one of the victims was relieved of his watch and wallet. Law enforcement officials confirmed that at least one of the masked assailants was armed with a handgun.
The situation escalated when the group attempted to carjack the second victim’s Ferrari. Fortunately, this victim managed to evade the carjacking attempt by driving away. As he fled, one of the suspects fired a shot at the Ferrari, shattering a window. Despite the gunfire, the victim was able to reach a nearby gas station with only minor injuries and promptly contacted 911 to report the crime.
Investigators stated that the robbers fled the scene in a blue Kia sedan. The Fashion Island area has experienced another violent crime this summer. Back in July, a 68-year-old tourist from New Zealand tragically died after being struck by a getaway car during a robbery attempt at the same location.
The recent Fashion Island Shooting has sparked concern among shoppers and local residents. “I’m shocked, but I’m also kind of scared because I walk home far from where I park,” said Angie Francis, a shopper at Fashion Island, expressing a sentiment shared by many in the community. “The fact that it’s so close to home and it’s been happening so often is frightening.” This incident underscores growing anxieties about safety and security in popular shopping destinations.
Currently, Newport Beach police are continuing their investigation into the Fashion Island robbery and shooting. Authorities are urging anyone with information about this incident to come forward and assist with their inquiries as they work to apprehend the suspects and enhance security measures in the area. No further details are available to the public at this time as the investigation remains ongoing.
