Residency Requirements for Tuition Purposes at FIT

Establishing residency for tuition purposes at the Fashion Institute of Technology requires meeting specific criteria outlined by New York State law.

U.S. Citizens and Permanent Resident Aliens:

To qualify as a New York State resident for tuition purposes at FIT, individuals must establish legal residence and maintain a domicile in New York State for at least one year before the semester starts. A domicile is defined as a permanent home where one intends to return after any absence. Simply residing in New York for 12 months does not automatically qualify one as a resident. Students under 24 with out-of-state parents or legal guardians must prove financial independence and an established New York domicile.

Residency applications and further details are available at the FIT Bursar’s Office or online at fitnyc.edu/bursar.

New York City residents meeting the state’s one-year residency requirement need not file a County Certificate of Residence. However, New York State residents living outside the five boroughs must submit a County Certificate of Residence, issued by their residing county, each academic year to maintain in-state tuition eligibility. This certificate is mandatory and must be filed with the Bursar’s Office at the start of each term.

Students must submit a new County Certificate of Residence each fall semester. Students starting in other semesters (winter, spring, summer) must provide the certificate at the start of their first semester and a new one the following fall. Counties may have differing issuance criteria and deadlines. While FIT sends annual reminders with application forms to enrolled New York State residents, students are responsible for submitting completed forms to their county and the Certificate of Residence to FIT.

Nonimmigrant Aliens:

International students holding F-1 Student Visas are ineligible for New York State resident tuition rates at the Fashion Institute of Technology. However, students with other visa types might qualify if they’ve been New York State residents for a year before registration, possessing the qualifying visa for the same duration. More information on residency requirements for international students at FIT can be found at fitnyc.edu/bursar.
