The Fashion Designer Behind the Incredibles: Edna Mode

Director Brad Bird challenged the typical comic book trope of heroes creating their own costumes in “The Incredibles.” Instead, he introduced Edna Mode, a brilliant fashion designer specializing in superhero attire. Edna’s sharp wit and unique design philosophy made her an instant favorite, securing a memorable role in the 2005 Oscars.

“Incredibles 2” sees Edna’s return as she tackles a new challenge: designing a suit for baby Jack-Jack, whose powers have just emerged. No capes, of course!

For years, fans speculated about Edna’s real-life inspiration, suggesting figures like Edith Head and Rei Kawakubo. However, Bird denies these rumors, stating that Edna’s character isn’t directly based on any specific individual. He envisions her as half-German, half-Japanese, reflecting the impactful and technically advanced nature of both cultures. This blend embodies Edna’s personality: compact yet possessing significant influence.

Bryn Imagire, the shading art director for “Incredibles 2”, acknowledges that Edith Head’s iconic style, with her blunt bangs and bold glasses, served as a visual influence for Edna’s appearance. For the sequel, Imagire delved into the works of Japanese designers like Kawakubo, Eiko Ishioka, and Chitose Abe, incorporating their aesthetics into Edna’s new wardrobe.

Imagire designed numerous looks for Edna, ultimately presenting two to Bird: a sleek indigo dress and a striking black-and-red kimono. These outfits reflect Kawakubo’s philosophy that beauty doesn’t necessitate prettiness, treating garments as abstract sculptures rather than mere clothing.

Edna’s distinct voice, a blend of Japanese and German accents delivered with unwavering confidence, is another defining characteristic. Brad Bird himself provides this voice, initially as a placeholder before offering the role to Lily Tomlin. Tomlin, recognizing Bird’s unique interpretation, encouraged him to continue voicing the character. Bird admits a personal connection to Edna, stating that her unwavering self-assuredness mirrors his own at his most confident.
