Fashion Cutting: Transforming Discarded Clothes into Sustainable Fashion

Upcycled Fashion, a non-profit organization in Peñasco, New Mexico, breathes new life into discarded clothing through innovative Fashion Cutting techniques. This creative endeavor, founded by Jean Nichols and Anita Marie, not only reduces textile waste but also empowers local women by providing training and employment opportunities in design, sewing, and retail.

The organization receives donated clothing, which is meticulously sorted by color and fabric type at their WEARhouse facility. This large quonset hut serves as the creative hub where designers transform old garments into unique, stylish pieces.

Upcycled Fashion receives funding from various organizations that support economic opportunities for women and girls, arts and cultural initiatives, and entrepreneurial endeavors. This funding underscores the program’s positive impact on the community and its commitment to sustainability.

The designers at Upcycled Fashion, each with their unique artistic vision, create a diverse range of clothing, from tailored pieces to funkier designs. The organization showcases its more avant-garde creations in fashion shows, highlighting the potential of upcycled materials.

Beyond creating fashionable clothing, the WEARhouse also provides resources for local theater groups seeking costumes. Additionally, students and women re-entering the workforce can access clothing free of charge, further demonstrating the organization’s commitment to community support.

The finished garments are available for purchase at Art For the Heart studio in Peñasco, open Thursdays through Sundays. Customers can try on and purchase unique upcycled pieces, supporting sustainable fashion and local artisans.

Upcycled Fashion also operates a retail store in Taos, located in the same building as Sustaining Cultures. The store offers a wide selection of upcycled clothing and accessories, providing a convenient location for customers to discover sustainable fashion options.

Upcycled Fashion also caters to retailers through wholesale partnerships, expanding the reach of their sustainable clothing line. This wholesale approach allows other businesses to offer unique, eco-friendly fashion choices to their customers.

The organization is constantly exploring new avenues for fashion cutting and upcycling, including a potential line of custom-made pet apparel, demonstrating their innovative spirit and commitment to expanding their sustainable practices.
