The thrill of participating in my first kimono fashion show, amidst a flurry of cherry blossoms, was an unforgettable experience. My heart pounded beneath a rinzu silk kimono, a breathtaking masterpiece adorned with sakura (cherry blossoms) and gosho-kuruma (Court Carriage) motifs. Designed by a kabuki actor and gifted to me, its gradated hues of pink, purple, and white made it the most beautiful kimono I own. The sheer elegance of the garment filled me with both awe and anxiety. The fear of accidentally stepping on the delicate silk while navigating the pre-show chaos was palpable.
Preparing for the Cherry Blossom Runway
The preparation process was a whirlwind of questions and nervous energy. How should I style my hair? What makeup look would complement the kimono? How should I walk gracefully in zori sandals, especially after a last-minute adjustment that morning? Even maintaining a serene facial expression while walking in a kimono felt like a monumental task.
I opted for a French braid crown, loosely pulled for a soft, romantic look, paired with a low bun and a few wispy tendrils framing my face. A touch of purple eyeshadow, echoing the kimono’s hues, completed the look. My gait, inspired by traditional Japanese dance lessons, involved a slight sliding motion with bent knees held together. While I aimed for a gentle smile, the photographs later revealed a more intense expression – perhaps plotting world domination? A simple smile will suffice next time.

A Celebration of Cherry Blossom Fashion
The show itself was a breathtaking display of artistry and elegance. Each of the 22 women radiated beauty in their unique kimonos, showcasing a stunning array of colors, designs, and styles. From traditional to modern, serious to playful, the show captured the diverse spirit of Cherry Blossom Fashion. The audience of over 200, gathered at the San Diego Friendship Garden pavilion, responded with enthusiastic cheers and applause. They were captivated by everything from intricate obi tying demonstrations to a vibrant kimono dance performance set to a pop song.
The event highlighted the versatility and timeless beauty of kimono, proving its relevance in contemporary fashion. It was a day filled with joy, shared appreciation for Japanese culture, and the sheer delight of wearing these exquisite garments. Hopefully, more fashion shows will follow, allowing us to share the beauty and joy of kimono with a wider audience. The experience underscored the powerful connection between fashion, culture, and the ephemeral beauty of cherry blossoms.
