Harkins Theatres is bringing a new entertainment concept to Chandler Fashion Center, taking over the upper level of the former Sears department store. This new venture will complement the existing Harkins movie theater already at the mall. While details about the concept remain scarce, its addition signifies a significant development for Chandler Fashion Square’s entertainment landscape.
The deal was initially announced during Macerich’s fourth-quarter earnings call with investors. Macerich, which manages Chandler Fashion Center along with other prominent properties like Scottsdale Fashion Square and Arrowhead Towne Center, confirmed the signing with Harkins Theatres.

Macerich CEO Thomas E. O’Hern referred to the project as a “new entertainment concept” during the investor call but did not elaborate further. Harkins Theatres has also declined to comment on the specifics of the project at this time.
According to SEC filings, the redevelopment of the former Sears space is projected to be completed in late 2020 or potentially extend into the second half of 2021. The remaining portion of the Sears location is slated for future retail use. However, beyond the Harkins project, no other tenants have been officially announced.
The addition of this new Harkins entertainment concept follows other recent additions to Chandler Fashion Center, including the Crayola Experience and several new dining and retail options. The former Sears at Arrowhead Towne Center is also slated for redevelopment, although specific plans for that location remain undisclosed.
