Lakme Fashion Week 2024, in partnership with the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI), showcased a vibrant array of fashion trends that redefined the Indian fashion landscape. Held from March 13th to 17th at Mumbai’s Jio World Convention Centre, the event highlighted the creativity and innovation of Indian designers. Eight key themes emerged, capturing the spirit of modern India while celebrating its rich cultural heritage. Bold silhouettes, sustainable practices, traditional craftsmanship, modern interpretations, inventive prints, comfort-focused designs, statement accessories, and the rise of streetwear defined the week.
Bold silhouettes dominated the runway, with designers experimenting with exaggerated proportions, structural shapes, and asymmetric hemlines. Rahul Mishra’s nature-inspired collection featured flowing garments with oversized elements in single colors and textures.
Shantanu Nikhil presented architectural designs with sharp lines and geometric forms, while Aseem and Pooja’s “Ambi” collection showcased uneven draping inspired by Indian sadhus. Draped and wrapped styles, deconstructed designs, and layered looks added further dimension to the bold silhouette trend. Rajesh Pratap Singh’s capsule collection exemplified the layered look with contrasting fabrics.
Lakme Fashion Week 2024 championed sustainability. Urvashi Kaur’s collection, crafted entirely from tetra pack materials, demonstrated a commitment to eco-conscious practices. The “Renew” project highlighted zero-waste principles and upcycling techniques.
JJ Valaya also embraced sustainability, utilizing eco-friendly fabrics like R|Elan GreenGold made from recycled PET bottles. The use of innovative technologies like R|Elan Kooltex ensured both style and environmental responsibility.
A celebration of craft and culture shone through in Gaurang Shah’s collection, which showcased traditional Indian textiles, colors, and patterns. Inspired by India’s music and dance traditions, his sarees and lehengas featured intricate embroidery and embellishments.
The fusion of modernity and tradition was evident in Varun Chakkilam’s “Lenora” collection, featuring opulent embellishments and luxurious fabrics. Showstopper Sara Ali Khan embodied the collection’s essence in a lehenga adorned with intricate dori embroidery, glass beads, and Swarovski crystals.
Prints and patterns took center stage with Gauri and Nainika’s elegant and minimalist floral designs. A refined color palette of magenta, light pink, and silver complemented the delicate floral motifs.
Comfort and practicality were emphasized in the comfort code trend. Chola the Label showcased easy and breezy pieces like kaftans, baggy co-ord sets, and asymmetrical tops, reflecting a move towards relaxed silhouettes and breathable fabrics.
Statement accessories added drama and flair. Oversized earrings, chunky necklaces, embellished belts, bold headgear, and statement handbags elevated ensembles.
Streetwear’s influence was undeniable, with brands like “All You Can Street” showcasing urban-inspired designs. Lakme Fashion Week 2024 embraced the growing popularity of streetwear, highlighting emerging talent in men’s fashion. Brands like Jaywalking, Countrymade, and Rishtha by Arjun Saluja presented their unique interpretations of street style.
