Max Fashion Holiday Diaries: A No-Buy Year Update

This month marks three months into my no-buy challenge, and the urge to acquire new clothes is strong. However, remembering my successful no-buy year in 2016 keeps me motivated. Documenting my daily outfits helps me track favorite pieces and identify wardrobe gaps.

Taking daily outfit photos reminds me of my fashion blogging days. I only snap a picture when I feel truly confident in my look. Surprisingly, my short blue hair simplifies my fashion choices. A simple black jumper, jeans, and Converse suddenly become a stylish statement. My desire now is to curate a minimal wardrobe with perfectly fitting pieces.

Remember, repeating outfits is perfectly acceptable, and nobody cares if you do.

For our office Christmas party, I repurposed my Morticia Addams Halloween costume. After seeing a stylish black velvet dress, I realized my Morticia dress was similar. With a few alterations, it became the perfect party outfit, paired with black patent Mary Janes.

Another dress, a sleek black velvet slip dress, got its moment at Hogmanay. Despite needing a bra, I embraced the no-bra look and felt confident and beautiful.

This Christmas, I received a sewing book, triggering memories of my frustrating pattern-making class in art school.

However, I’m now excited to try sewing again. Perhaps making my own clothes will satisfy my fashion cravings. I plan to document my sewing journey in this newsletter.

While traveling to Switzerland, I successfully packed for eight days in a carry-on bag. We visited a cool flea market in Geneva called Le Palais Cosmique, filled with vintage and secondhand clothing. Despite the temptation, I resisted buying anything.

This year’s no-buy experiment will include interviews, upcycling videos, sewing project updates, a clothes swap event in Edinburgh, reviews of clothes swap apps, and these monthly recaps. Creating content takes effort, and engagement from readers is encouraging. Likes, comments, social media shares, emails, and subscriptions help keep me motivated.
