To establish New York State residency for tuition purposes, US citizens and permanent residents must maintain a domicile in New York State for at least one year before the semester starts. Domicile refers to a permanent residence with the intention of returning after any absence.

Students under 24 with out-of-state parents or guardians must demonstrate financial independence and an established New York State domicile to qualify for in-state tuition. New York City residents meeting the one-year residency requirement don’t need a County Certificate of Residence. However, New York State residents outside the five boroughs must file this certificate annually with the Bursar’s Office. The certificate, obtained from the student’s county, must be submitted by the semester’s start. Specific county deadlines and criteria apply.

Students enrolling in the fall must resubmit the certificate the following fall. Students starting in other semesters must submit it at the beginning of their first semester and again the following fall. Counties may have varying deadlines. Late registration fees are $150 for full-time students and $75 for part-time students. Locker rental is $30 per student per semester. Non-matriculated students taking credit courses pay a one-time fee of $65 and $30 per subsequent semester. Makeup exams cost $25 each. Tuition due dates are set by FIT and can vary. FIT utilizes a secure online e-billing system accessible through the MyFIT portal. Returned checks incur a $30 fee. FIT may refuse personal checks under certain circumstances. Two returned checks due to insufficient funds will result in refusal of future personal checks. Legal action may be taken for unpaid debts, with associated costs borne by the student. Students with outstanding balances, excluding certified financial aid or payment plans, by the due date may be deregistered, potentially incurring late registration and program change fees upon re-enrollment. Class availability is not guaranteed for re-enrolled students.

FIT offers housing in four residence halls with traditional and apartment-style options. Traditional rooms have shared bathrooms and require a meal plan. Apartment-style accommodations are available in all four halls; meal plans are mandatory for new students and a declining balance plan is required for returning students. Charges vary by accommodation type and building. Housing and meal plan rates are subject to Board of Trustees approval. As of spring 2024, typical resident student charges were $5,181-$5,925 per semester for traditional accommodations, $7,245-$8,343 per semester for apartment/suite accommodations and $1,700 – $2,819 per semester for meal plans.
