Harkins Theatres is bringing a new entertainment concept to Chandler Fashion Center, taking over the upper level of the former Sears department store. This new venture will complement the existing Harkins movie theater already at the mall. While details about the concept remain scarce, its addition signifies a significant development for the mall and the entertainment landscape in Chandler.
The deal was initially revealed during Macerich’s fourth-quarter earnings call with investors. Macerich, which manages Chandler Fashion Center and other prominent shopping centers in the Phoenix area, confirmed the agreement with Harkins Theatres. Thomas E. O’Hern, CEO of Macerich, referred to it as a “new entertainment concept” but did not elaborate further.
According to SEC filings, the redevelopment of the former Sears space is anticipated to be finished in late 2021 or potentially into the second half of 2022. While the remaining portion of the Sears store is designated for “future retail uses,” no specific tenants have been announced besides the Harkins project. This redevelopment project also extends to the former Sears store at Arrowhead Towne Center, another Macerich property.
The addition of this new Harkins entertainment concept comes on the heels of other recent additions to Chandler Fashion Center. In May 2019, the Crayola Experience opened a 20,000-square-foot attraction at the mall. Subsequently, Chandler Fashion Center welcomed new dining options like Potato Corner, Dough Licious Desserts, Pinkberry, and Haagen-Dazs, along with clothing retailers Evereve and Aerie. This continued expansion indicates a thriving environment for entertainment and retail at Chandler Fashion Center. The new Harkins concept is poised to further enhance the mall’s appeal as a destination for entertainment and shopping. The strategic location of the former Sears store provides ample space for Harkins to create an immersive and innovative entertainment experience. As Harkins Theatres continues to expand its offerings beyond traditional movie screenings, this new concept at Chandler Fashion Center promises to be a significant attraction.
