Shojo Fashion Online: Creating Characters for a Digital Comic

Creating compelling characters is crucial for any visual narrative, and digital comics are no exception. This project utilizes Manuel Bastioni Lab (MB-Lab), a Blender plugin, to design characters for a shojo-inspired comic. MB-Lab allows extensive customization, similar to MakeHuman (http://makehuman.org), offering control over nearly every aspect of a character’s appearance. The plan is to transition to the latest MB-Lab character style, as showcased on the developer’s website (http://www.manuelbastioni.com/gallery_140_03.php and http://www.manuelbastioni.com/gallery_140_04.php), once the next version of MB-Lab is released.

From Character Design to Digital Comic Production

Before diving into character customization, several pre-production steps are necessary. This includes outlining episodes, writing the script, and familiarizing oneself with Unreal Engine 4 (UR4). After the new MB-Lab release, the focus will shift to clothing design, rigging models and attachments. The goal is to use two base character models with morphs for the entire cast, similar to the approach used in Daz 3D. UR4’s capabilities as a game engine are key to realizing the project’s vision, from animation and level design to final story output. This foundation will also allow for the development of future stories.

Utilizing UR4 for Scene Blocking and Future Game Development

A completed “Shogun girl” character is ready for integration into UR4. Testing this character with default mannequin animations in UR4 will enable preliminary scene blocking. This process involves using existing animations to plan out level layouts and scene compositions until custom animations and levels are created. Snapshots from these blocked-out scenes will be used for the comic panels. Furthermore, there’s potential for creating free promotional levels where players can control a character and explore the environment, and perhaps even develop a full game in the future.

Looking Ahead: Alpha Masking and Attachment Tutorials

A future tutorial on alpha masking for clothing and attaching accessories (wings, tails, hats, etc.) would be beneficial. This knowledge is essential for refining character designs and adding intricate details to the shojo fashion aesthetic. Clear and informative video tutorials are invaluable for learning these techniques.
