The Fashion Design program offers a comprehensive curriculum, covering computer-aided design (CAD), sketching, draping, patternmaking, construction, sewing techniques, and textiles. Students gain a strong foundation in both theoretical and practical aspects of fashion design.

Fashion Design AAS

The Associate in Applied Science (AAS) program in Fashion Design provides a foundational understanding of core design principles and techniques. This program prepares students for entry-level positions in the fashion industry or for further study in a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) program. Graduates of the AAS program can seamlessly transition into the BFA in Fashion Design or other related BFA and BS programs at FIT.

Fashion Design BFA

The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) program in Fashion Design offers specialized concentrations in childrenswear, intimate apparel, knitwear, special occasion, and sportswear. Students delve deeper into design concepts, mastering advanced technologies and honing their presentation skills. The program culminates in a required internship and a senior collection mentored by acclaimed designers. Outstanding student work may be featured in the prestigious Future of Fashion runway show.

FIT’s Fashion Design program has a long and distinguished history of preparing students for successful careers in various sectors of the fashion industry, from haute couture to ready-to-wear to mass market.

The program fosters collaboration with industry leaders, providing students with real-world experience and opportunities. A recent partnership with The RealReal, an online luxury consignment marketplace, challenged students to design sustainable, upcycled coats from unsold inventory.

The annual Future of Fashion runway show, presented by Macy’s, showcases the exceptional talent of graduating BFA students. This professionally produced event provides a platform for students to present their innovative designs to a wide audience.

Student-led initiatives, like the Runway27 club, offer additional opportunities for creative exploration and collaboration. Runway27’s annual fashion show provides a platform for students to showcase their unique visions and design aesthetics.

FIT Fashion Design students consistently receive recognition for their exceptional talent. Recent graduates have won prestigious awards from organizations like the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and secured scholarships and employment contracts with luxury brands like Loro Piana.
